A fella asked me yesterday if I had plans for the upcoming Labor Day weekend. I told him that I did, I planned to do “nothing”.
Truth is, “nothing”, is indeed something, and sometimes “nothing”, is the best something we can do for ourselves mentally, physically, and spiritually, if we can pull it off.
This became apparent to me summer of 2021 on what has become an annual guy trip to Northern Minnesota in August.
The first couple of days into that trip I felt this nagging, almost constant feeling, that I needed to be doing….“something”.
I didn’t verbalize that feeling but when one of my friends made the comment, “I feel like I need to be doing something”, I realized it wasn’t just me that was idling internally.
As I have often said before, if the devil can’t make us bad, he’ll settle for making us busy, and there I was….
On a much needed and highly anticipated “get away”, 1,400 miles from home, out in the wilderness, sitting on this big deck, looking out over a beautiful lake…. physically fidgeting, with a busy mind.
Thing is…. it can be very hard to turn it all off, drop the mental luggage, completely relax, and just do “nothing”, for even a short period of time, let alone for an extended period of time, but….
Speaking for myself, on the rare occasion I am able to do this, I feel a sense of peace and refreshment that has too often, become foreign to me.
I mean, if you need another reference, consider this…. Jesus himself “frequently retreated to a quiet place” (Luke 5:16).
If Jesus needed to frequently break away from the stresses of this world to recharge physically, mentally and spiritually…. then how much more so must we?! (Seriously, read that twice)
So, if you have a chance to do “nothing” this coming weekend, or in the days and weeks ahead, then get it on the calendar, getcha mind right…. and do “nothing” well.
Get In The Boat. Do Your Part.
Rest, Relax, Recharge, Reload…. From Nose To Toes!
